SUMMARY:Innovation and Bridging the Digital Divide on the Path to 6G
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\nThe OpenRIT-6G consortium is thrilled to announce the next edition in our international workshop series will be held in Santiago, Chile, from 1-2 April 2025.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop will focus on the critical role of open platforms and tools in accelerating the development of 6G networks while addressing societal challenges such as digital inclusion and connecting the unconnected. By fostering collaboration through initiatives like OPENRIT-6G, the workshop will explore how open-source software, modular frameworks, and collaborative ecosystems can enable scalable, cost-effective, and inclusive 6G solutions. A unique feature of this workshop will be a hands-on session using the SLICES Blueprint, empowering participants to deploy their own 5G infrastructure based on open-source software and off-the-shelf (OTS) components.\n\n\n\nTopics will include open-source innovation, low-cost deployment for underserved regions, sustainability, integration of open platforms into cutting-edge research environments, education and capacity building and practical tools for real-world deployments.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMotivation and Objectives:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe journey to 6G presents an opportunity to rethink connectivity paradigms with a focus on openness, practicality, and inclusivity. Open platforms and tools have been transformative for 5G, but their potential in 6G is even greater, offering:\n\n\n\n\nAccelerated Innovation: Open-source software and modular frameworks reduce barriers, driving rapid experimentation.\n\n\n\nHands-On Capability: Empowering researchers and developers to experiment and deploy real-world systems using accessible tools.\n\n\n\nEquity in Access: Affordable, modular solutions to bridge the digital divide and connect underserved regions.\n\n\n\nGlobal Collaboration: Shared platforms and tools enabling interdisciplinary and cross-regional innovation.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis edition follows the successful workshops started in Cape Town in 2024. This workshop will address the following key questions:\n\n\n\n\nWhat policies, frameworks, and collaborations are necessary to scale open platforms for global impact?\n\n\n\nHow can open platforms like OPENRIT-6G drive 6G innovation?\n\n\n\nWhat role can the SLICES Blueprint play in enabling hands-on experimentation and learning?\n\n\n\nHow can open-source tools help reduce deployment costs and support digital inclusion?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPreliminary Programme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesdayApril 1WednesdayApril 2ThursdayApril 38:30Check-inCheck-in9:00Welcome SessionSponsor TalkSlices Hands-on Workshop (Limited)9:30Keynote 1The transformative potential of open platformsKeynote 2Survey of national/Regional situation10:00Keynote 1The transformative potential of open platformsKeynote 2Survey of national/Regional situation10:30BreakBreak11:00Local Research panelIndustry panel11:3012:00Industry andResearcher demosPanel 2: Connecting the Unconnected with Open Tools12:3013:00LunchLunch13:3014:00Sponsor TalkSponsor Talk14:30Panel 1: OPENRIT-6GPanel 3: Open Research Data, Reproducibility, and Standards15:00Panel 1: OPENRIT-6GPanel 3: Open Research Data, Reproducibility, and Standards15:30BreakBreak16:00Poster session &NetworkingPoster session &Networking16:3017:00Roundtable Discussion 1Roundtable Discussion 217:3018:00Closing Session\n
